Growing Pumpkins

Last year the children at Hamilton East School planted pumpkins. They were harvested this week and some will be entered in the pumpkin competition that is happening at the Hamilton Gardens this Sunday.

Look at our photos from today. First we guessed the weight of the pumpkins at Positive Assembly, then Ms Jones weighed them. Some were 3 kilos and the biggest was about 45 kilos. Hine couldn't even lift it!

Room 6 went back to look at the pumpkins. We found the ones that our classes planted last year. Some children were in Room 8 so they looked at the pumpkin they had grown from their plant and some children helped plant the pumpkin for Room 6.

Last year Hine was in Room 14 and that pumpkin grew really funny. We decided it looked like a cat so we carved a cat face. We will enter it in the competition at the Hamilton Gardens on Sunday.

Cheese making

Room 6 were lucky enough to recieve a DIY cheese making kit.

We decided to make mozzarella or as Room 6 refer to it, pizza cheese. We heated the milk in our microwave, added some cheese culture and renault. Following the recipe we also made a rock salt broth to sit the cheese in for a bit too. We chilled it over night. The next day we visited the garden for some yummy treats to eat with our cheese. We picked some cherry tomatoes and some basil. Check out our photos from the experience.

We have been learning about dairy farming.
Have you seen Rosie's movies? You can watch them here.

Sunflowers

We looked at the sunflowers, we sketched the sunflowers and we painted the sunflowers.
The sunflowers are very big.
What flowers do you like?

We painted the petals.

Then we glued sand to the centre. When the glue was dry we painted it the colour of the seeds.

It's writing time!

We have been learning what to do at writing time.

Here are some photos of us writing, illustrating our writing and learning our alphabet.

We think, talk, plan and write.

We illustrate our writing in our Home book.

We play alphabet games.

What do you do at writing time?

Buddy biscuits

We made buddy biscuits today.

Some people at Hamilton East could smell them cooking at morning tea time.

Our buddy class came to visit and we baked the biscuits from this recipe.

When the biscuits were in the oven we read stories to each other.

We ate them in Room 10 today and they were delicious. They are a shortbread recipe.

Metamorphisis - what does that mean?

We are learning about the life cycle of a monarch butterfly.

Hamilton East has a beautiful butterfly garden. We saw different sized caterpillar's, a chrysalis and even some monarch butterflies.

Yesterday we saw this caterpillar in the shape of a J. Today we checked on it. Can you see what happened over night?
Can you see the chrysalis? You have to look carefully.

Visiting Miropiko

On Tuesday we went on the school bus to Miropiko.
When we got there we saw carvings like the ones on our gateway. We sketched some of our favourite parts from the carvings.
We saw a taniwha and talked about the different meanings.

Did you know you can even see the river from Miropiko?

We wonder if you know what Miropiko means?

Do you know the story of the Pou? It is very tall and impressive. It tells about the people who used to live here.

Our Class Treaty

We listened to the book
The Treehut Treaty by Wiremu Grace.

Our class talked about the Treaty of Waitangi and it's importance to New Zealand. We thought really hard about what we might need to include in our class treaty so we can all learn together.
This is our class treaty.

What do you know about your class treaty?
