Our Trip to Hamilton Gardens

As part of our Turangawaewae theme, room 14 along with rooms 15 and 16 visited the Hamilton Gardens last 25 March. We explored the Chinese Scholar's Garden, Italian Renaissance Gardens, Surrealist Gardens, Kitchen Gardens, and the playground. It was an awesome learning experience for our tamariki as each used their scientist eyes to notice and observe.  Our parent helpers tried their best to help our tamariki to answer the scavenger hunt give to them.

Science Experiments

 Our Science Experiment

We did a cool experiment last Friday.

First, we had two containers. One is filled with ice and the other one is filled with hot water.

We placed a bottle with a balloon in it.

Then, we gathered data:

Experiment 1

7 said the balloon will expand if we put it on the container with ice.

3 said it will explode.

5 said nothing will happen to the balloon.

Experiment 2

2 said the balloon will fly away.

10 said the balloon will expand.

The balloon expanded with the hot water but nothing happened to the balloon in the ice container.

We learned the cold air goes down and warm air goes up. That is why the balloon in the hot water container expanded.

We also tried putting the balloon bottle in a bigger container of hot water to see if it will expand more. And it did!

Some wanted to try and put hot water inside the bottle. The balloon did not expand.

Marae Trip

Our Marae Trip

We went to the bus to go to the marae. I sat with my friend Sachkirat. The bus was too wobbly. I like the Kapa Haka at the marae.

By Abheek

I saw the wharenui and I heard the Kapa Haka! Some people sang and danced. Someone talked about the wharenui. They had cool patterns. We sketched a tree and the wharenui. We did some koru patterns.

I like the Kapa Haka singing. It was a bit fun but a bit boring too. I like sketching, I sketched a tree. It’s cool. My favorite was going inside the wharenui. It was interesting.

I sketched the tree at the marae. I like the design and the Kapa Haka when they sang. It was beautiful.

When we walked into the marae, we sat on the floor. We listened to a person talking. I like the bus trip. I sat with Elisha and Simon. My favourite carving is the tekoteko.
