Visiting Maungatautari

Visiting Maungatautari Sanctuary on PhotoPeach

We visited Mangatautari on the school bus. We have been learning about our environment with a focus on growing. We looked at the flora and fauna at Maungatautari. We heard about the different types of plants that grow in the sanctuary and how people and animals can use them. When we first arrived we heard about the types of predators that they have tried to keep out of Maugatautari and how they manage the pests.

Our highlights were seeing lots of Kaka birds and some were within arms reach. We also saw two Tuatara up very close. One had tried to wiggle it's tail off so it had a stump of two tails. We walked a lot and it was a big day out for us.

We would like to thank the parents that came with us on the trip and made it possible for us to go.

Planting our seedlings

We planted our seeds a couple of weeks ago. They started growing. They turned into bean plants and they grew crazy long. We needed to plant and water them. We had to untangle them and take them to our kitchen garden. In the the garden we planted our seedlings and we helped them to wrap around some sticks so they would grow up nice and tall.

We made slideshows in the Orchard about the stages of growing plants.

Seed Shop Fundraising

Room 6 opened a seed shop last term to fundraise for things to go in our school kitchen. We brainstormed what we thought we needed to buy and decided that we should go on the bus to a shop to buy our items.

We went to visit The Scullery in Hamilton. They were awesome at helping us find the things we needed. We purchased a lot of cookie cutters and a baking tray. The Scullery kindly gave us some cookie cutters too. We choose different animal shapes and some gingerbread shapes too.

As soon as we got back to school we washed our cookie cutters and baked some biscuits to test them out.

We love baking and it was great being able to choose our own cookie shape.

Gingerbread men

This week our class is split up into four groups with the children from Shelley, Danielle and Ms Daniels class. We are having a fun week of learning experiences while Danielle's class is being refurbished.

The children working with Hine and Kate are listening to the story "The Gingerbread Man" then making gingerbread and retelling the story.

They get a copy of the recipe and their very own gingerbread that they made.

Gingerbread Man where have you run? You ran away before we could have fun.
Here is the recipe so you can make some more Gingerbread.

How to make Gingerbread

6 ½ tablespoons of butter
½ cup of brown sugar
2 cups of sifted flour
1 teaspoon of baking soda
3 teaspoons of ginger
½ cup of molasses (or golden syrup)

2.   Mix dry ingredients and molasses until
you have a dough.
3.   Knead with your hands and roll out on a
floured board.
4.   Cut out cookie shapes using cookie cutter.

Room 6's Seed Shop

Room 6 have been running a seed shop with the help of King Seeds.

Our classroom has a kitchen in it and when we use it we sometimes need the teachers to bring equipment from home so we decided to fundraise so we could buy some more things for our kitchen.

These are the things we think we would benefit from having at school.
Thanks for supporting our cause and we hope you all get to use the things we buy sometime soon.

What equipment do you think we need in the Cool Kids Kitchen?

Baking with our Buddy

I liked making the buddy biscuits with our buddy Isabelle. We have been including our buddy in our class. Next term we will have two new buddies from Room 5 coming to learn with us. They came for a visit today. We will make them feel welcome when they start in our room. You can find our buddy recipe here.
