Different Volcanic Eruptions

Term 3 was a time Room 16 explored more about volcanoes. First, we learned about the parts of a volcano and how it erupts.

Then we did different experiments which showed how different volcanoes erupt. Here are the illustrations made in groups and some description the students shared:

Strombolian Eruption

           Thick lava- Eiva

          Big explosion!- Thiana

Ash, rocks and lava come out together- Zeppelin

Lava and fireballs burst out.- Winter

Vulcanian Eruption

       Ash fall eruption - Leighton

It's like smoke that comes out of chimneys. - Dre

Effusive Eruption

Lava flows slowly and it is not explosive.- Kristi

Eruption that has lava flowing out from the crater and vents. - Safwan

Pelean Eruption

Sticky lava flows and then smoke and ash come out too.- Akshay and AJ

It is like saying it is going to explode but have thick lava first. - Te-Tare

The Volcano

As part of our theme on volcanoes, Room 16 learned a poem and used self made percussion instruments to express the movements that a volcano has. The class had fun identifying the verbs in the poem and cooperatively came up with rhythm to accompany each. It was a team effort as we took turns saying some lines of the poem with expression. Click on the video and see how each tamariki gave their best in performing this poem.

Class Volcano Diorama

Room 16's tamariki have been working so hard into making our class volcano diorama. We also did some writing about how we made the volcano, then we planned on what we can put to improve it. It is a work in progress!

Room 16 made a volcano last Friday. We tore cardboard. We used glue and water. We painted the volcano brown and green.

Room 16 made an enormous volcano. We used a cardboard and tape. Some of us made goop with glue and water. I am going to put house and it will be made of paper.

Hurray! We made a volcano. First, Ivy took a square card from her bag and we put glass in the middle. We sticked some tape to get the shape of a volcano. We placed card to fill in the sides. We put glue and water to make a slime and put it all over the volcano. Then six days after, it dried and we painted it. We had farm animals around it.

We made a perfect volcano diorama last Friday. First, we tore cardboards into bits of tiny pieces then we mixed glue and water. We put a glass cup on a flat cardboard and stick it with tape and cardboard into a volcano. We poured glue and water in the crater. We melted red crayon and it dripped on the side of the volcano.

Room 16 made a volcano diorama. I plan to put some boats and a lake. The lake was over the big volcano that was about to erupt. The volcano will not have a big but an effusive eruption.

I notice the volcano burnt and my idea was a good idea. We melted wax to make lava.

We made a terrific volcano diorama. We put the crayons on the crater. I plan to put houses and people running so far that they couldn’t even see it again.
